EastEnders: main character to be killed in gas explosion

The incendiary stunt will be shown next month - but who will die?

EastEnders is set to screen a gas explosion during September that will claim the life of one of its main characters.

A high profile week witnesses Walford residents left frantically searching for loved ones, while speculation is also mounting that the episodes will also see Max Branning’s (Jake Wood) nefarious scheming finally come to light.

Viewers have already seen Steven Beale (Aaron Sidwell) discover that Max is up to no good – and with Sidwell now set to exit the soap, fans will no doubt be wondering whether events will reach a climax as part of this fiery upcoming plotline.

It is also believed that an ambulance crash involving the Carters will be shown, although many storyline surprises are being held back until transmission to keep the audience guessing as to who exactly will meet their maker.

Albert Square is, of course, no stranger to incendiary disasters: gas being the root cause of a fireball that tore through the Bridge Street cafe in 2009, while Peggy Mitchell’s (Barbara Windsor) original exit in 2010 came in the aftermath of a blaze at the Queen Vic pub.

An explosion also put lives in danger in 2014 when Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) set alight to his own house in order to claim on the insurance, unaware that Kat (Jessie Wallace) was sleeping upstairs.

Speaking about this latest set-piece drama – which is set to kick off in the midst of the Walford in Bloom competition – a source told The Sun:

“It’s a bold stunt and has taken months of planning. It’ll trigger a load of other storylines off the back of it, but the explosion itself will be a major talking point.

“Viewers will be left wondering whether it was set off on purpose or by accident, and bosses are staying tight-lipped about who will die but at least one is looking like they will.”
