The 2019 US Open provided plenty of shocks – not least in the women's draw where Serena Williams was defeated in the final by 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu.

Defending champion Naomi Osaka exited in the last-16 after ousting home favourite Cori Gauff.

Novak Djokovic withdrew from the tournament midway through because of injury, while Roger Federer was usurped by the unseeded Grigor Dimitrov.

Victory for Nadal puts him one Slam away from Federer's men's singles record of 20.

Novak Djokovic claimed the Men's Singles prize last year after sweeping aside popular star Juan Martin del Potro in the final.

Naomi Osaka shocked the world of tennis when she beat Serena Williams in the Women’s Singles final.

However, her first major triumph was overshadowed as Williams was penalised for calling the umpire a 'thief' during an argument, and the Serena fans booed Osaka during the trophy presentation.
