Gemma Atkinson’s final Emmerdale scenes have been broadcast, with her character Carly Hope having left Marlon for a new life with former flame Matt.
Tonight’s episode puts an end to recent press speculation that Atkinson was set to leave the soap, despite the actress’s denials back in February.
A week of emotional episodes have seen Carly battling her feelings for her ex-boyfriend, even going so far as to propose to current love Marlon.
But it was the Woolpack chef who – having realised she was meant to be with Matt – ended the relationship, saying that Carly would be “the wife of my nightmares”.
Atkinson made her Emmerdale debut back in 2015 when Carly turned up in the village having fled her wedding. Now, events have almost come full circle, with Carly having done another flit, this time away from Marlon and back into the arms of Matt.
Breaking her silence on her departure from the Dales, Atkinson said today: “Like Carly if I get too comfortable I have to go and start something else and take a leap of faith before I get stuck. This job is amazing but I’m wary of just becoming part of the furniture.
“I’ll miss all the friends I’ve made, particularly Mark Charnock who plays Marlon. But I’m staying in the Emmerdale charity band Main Street so I’ll still be seeing my mates when we get together for gigs.
“So it’s the end for the moment but not forever, I’m 100% sure Carly will return as she has unfinished business in the village, it’s just a case of figuring out when and why – and who she can mess up when she gets back!”
Next week’s episodes will see Marlon facing flak over Carly’s sudden departure, particularly from daughter April who blames him for recent events. Will Marlon be able to convince April that he wasn’t actually to blame?
