Village vet Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) will return to Emmerdale this August, only to face heartbreak when he finds that estranged wife Rhona is now seeing suave Pierce Harris.
“He comes back to discover that the whole landscape has changed,” says show boss Iain MacLeod. “Rhona, the woman he thought he’d spend the rest of his life with, has taken up with Pierce, the widower of his dead mistress. Now that’s a Jeremy Kyle I’d look forward to watching!”
Paddy hasn’t been seen on screen since April when he took a job in Germany and left without Rhona following the exposure of his affair with teaching assistant Tess, who was killed in a hit and run accident.
Despite high viewer opinion of Paddy having soured thanks to his extra-marital fling, MacLeod promises that the character will try to make amends for past sins:
“I’ve just signed off on the episodes where he comes back and they’re funny, heartbreaking and full of bromance with Marlon.
“It’s such a welcome return for Paddy. It’s a chance for him to redeem himself as a character. We’d all agree that him sleeping with Tess turned him into a bit of a baddie and that viewers weren’t on his side for a lot of that.
“But he comes back with a big point to prove, which is to show that he’s a good guy and that he intends to put things right by Rhona. So it’s a big romantic dilemma for her.”
