Emmerdale: Matthew Wolfenden on going bald for David’s cancer story – “I still shock myself when I look in the mirror”

The character of David will be seen shaving his head tonight

Actor Matthew Wolfenden has admitted that he’s been left shocked by the sight of himself with shaved head and eyebrows.

The Emmerdale star, whose character David Metcalfe is currently undergoing chemotherapy for testicular cancer, has altered his appearance in order to best portray the role.

“I still shock myself when I look in the mirror,” Wolfenden told RadioTimes.com. “But if you go through chemo, you lose every bit of hair – eyebrows, nasal hair, eyelashes, everything. So we had to do it properly.”

The 36-year-old also revealed that he felt a responsibility to be as accurate as possible due to an Emmerdale crew member who had been through a smiliar experience.

“A lady at work called Angie, who’s a PA to one of the directors, was with me throughout the first four weeks of David losing his hair. And she’s had breast cancer and been through chemotherapy.

“She brought her chemo book in for me to read through, just so I could document where she went from and to. So her being on set meant that I wanted to get it right for her on the day.

“Things like that do open your eyes to what people have to go through. And it was a lot of pressure for me because Angie was there watching me pretend to do what she’d experienced in real life.”

Tonight’s episode of Emmerdale will see David shave his hair on screen after adoptive son Jacob goes bald as a show of solidarity.

Behind-the-scenes, of course, Wolfenden is also busy with his six-month-old son Bowie, the second child he’s had with partner and co-star Charley Webb. But it seems that sleep deprivation only helps when getting in character as David:

“Because the baby’s keeping us up, I’ve been going into work looking absolutely terrible. So I looked good for the part – make-up didn’t have to do much with me in the morning.

“I looked knackered. Big black bags under my eyes. Bad skin. So it all worked out really well.”
