It wouldn’t be a soap wedding without the threat of everything going wrong – and it looks like Emmerdale fans can expect plenty of drama as Laurel and Ashley tie the knot.
“It’s the most perfect, beautiful twist. And it’s a real heart-melter. All of which makes the subsequent twist more traumatic and shocking,” says actress Charlotte Bellamy.
The run-up to the wedding will see Doug voice his objections to the union – the result being that daughter Laurel bans him from attending the service.
Then comes the surprise revelation that the vicar has been plied with too much alcohol at the hen night and is now too hungover to officiate. Enter Ashley’s ex-girlfriend Harriet, who is forced to conduct the ceremony.
“Yes, the girls get the vicar so drunk that he can’t get out of bed, so Harriet has to take over and marry Laurel and Ashley. But I don’t think Laurel minds too much. She’s only thinking about one thing and that’s Ashley.”
The big day itself will also see Laurel make it up with Doug, who ends up walking her down the aisle. Yet despite there being an air of celebration, Bellamy admits that Ashley’s dementia is sure to make the future bittersweet.
“It’s an impossible situation. And this is ultimately a tragic love story,” says the star. “Laurel has made the decision to live life to the full with Ashley. She’s not thinking about the problems ahead. But we are going to really show how living with someone who has dementia can be frightening, shocking and disconcerting. Especially when there’s a young family involved.”
