Ashley Thomas’s (John Middleton) health will take a turn for the worse next week when he has a mini stroke.

Ashley – who has already been diagnosed with early onset vascular dementia – will be seen having a blackout during a village treasure hunt organised for Bob’s birthday. In a confused state, Ashley then staggers into a road as a car slows down.

Later on, Bob is alarmed when he realises that Ashley hasn’t returned home. But the vicar has managed to make it as far as the hospital, where a doctor explains to Ashley that he has had a mini stroke.

Bob, however, is still worried and is about to tell Harriet the truth about Ashley’s condition when he returns, saying that he got waylaid with parish business. When Ashley then confides in Bob that he’s had a mini stroke, the cafe owner decides that he doesn’t want to keep the secret anymore. Is the truth about to finally come out?

Last month, it was announced that 62-year-old Middleton is to leave Emmerdale when this particular plotline reaches its conclusion, although the timeframe for his exit has not yet been decided.

“I’m actually finding the prospect of leaving very exciting,” the actor said. “It’s another roll of the dice. I couldn’t ask for a better storyline to leave the show on.”
