Emotional EastEnders episode sees Whitney suffer a miscarriage

There was trauma for Lee and Whitney in tonight's visit to Albert Square

Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) and Lee Carter (Danny-Boy Hatchard) were left reeling in tonight’s episode of EastEnders after they lost their baby.

Traumatic scenes saw Whitney get rushed to hospital after she noticed that she was spotting. And after a consultation with doctors, it turned out she’d suffered a miscarriage. Whitney then had to face a procedure and a night on the wards after losing more blood.

The emotional storyline had not been pre-publicised by EastEnders, meaning that the impact on viewers was all the more keenly felt.

Show bosses are remaining tight-lipped on the repercussions this evening’s events will have on Whitney and Lee’s relationship, although actor Danny-Boy Hatchard is set to leave the BBC1 soap in the months ahead

Speaking recently, a BBC source said of Hatchard’s upcoming departure: “This was a tough decision but sometimes to create big storylines characters need to come and go.

“Danny-Boy is a dedicated actor and a popular cast member, and as part of the Carter family, no one should rule out a return.”

An EastEnders spokesman added: “Danny-Boy has been a great addition to the cast and we wish him all the best for the future.”
