Rita Simons to leave EastEnders as part of the same “big storyline” as on-screen sister Samantha Womack

Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell are bidding farewell to the Square together next year

It has been confirmed that Rita Simons will be leaving EastEnders next year alongside Samantha Womack. The two have been playing Roxy and Ronnie, the charismatic Mitchell sisters, for almost a decade.

An EastEnders spokesperson said: “Having joined the show in 2007, Rita immediately won the hearts of the audience in the role of Roxy Mitchell and between her and Samantha Womack they created one of the most iconic duos EastEnders has ever seen.”

The pair have been through a lot in their nine years on the show, from their difficult relationship with father Archie to Roxy sleeping with her sister’s partners Jack Branning and Charlie Cotton. Through it all they have somehow managed to stick together and their sisterly bond is still going strong.

It seems fitting that the sisters should depart the show together in an echo of their memorable joint arrival.

With such a tumultuous plot history their exit storyline looks set to be epic. An EastEnders spokesperson confirmed, “Alongside Samantha, Rita was recently offered to take part in the same big storyline that will see the Mitchell sisters depart Walford.”

What lies in store for Ronnie and Roxy in the coming months? And will they end up leaving in the back of a cab or in an altogether more sinister fashion?
