Actress Laurie Brett has revealed that it could well be her character Jane Beale who will turn out to have murdered Lucy Beale.
The long-running murder mystery has kept viewers guessing since Easter and Brett – who returns to the BBC1 soap next week – reckons that those who believe Jane to be guilty might well be right.
“I was quite excited when I read the odds of Jane being the killer,” says the actress. “I have no idea why she would do it, but if it is Jane then I can’t wait to see how it came to be her. At the stage of filming that we’re at, it could be any of us, really. So yes, it could be me.”
As for who she believes to have done it, Brett says that she has her eye “on four or five people”, but that she hasn’t really honed her detective skills. “I’ve stopped trying to work it out. Adam Woodyatt, on the hand, has not. We’re finding out so many things at the moment, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s me until I know any different!”
EastEnders is set to go live for its 30th anniversary in February 2015 and the actress admits to feeling nervous at the prospect. “I’m terrified. Obviously, the viewers are watching it for people to mess up. So I just hope I don’t bump into furniture and swear.”
And if it is Jane who is finally revealed to be the culprit, Brett doesn’t believe that this necessarily spells the end for her character on screen. “Even if Jane is the murderer, nobody has said that I can’t stay,” she says. “I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere in the next year or two and I know there is quite a lot of stuff ahead.”
