EastEnders spoilers: Ben and Jay could be the new Phil and Grant, says Harry Reid

"I feel it would be nice if Phil were to eventually take a step back and let these two grow up and start to take control"

EastEnders actor Harry Reid has high hopes that Ben and Jay will turn out to be the next generation of Mitchell brothers.

Reid – who plays Phil’s son on the BBC1 soap – says that he can see Ben and Jay (Jamie Borthwick) becoming the new Phil and Grant.

“That’s what I would love. It would be great and hopefully that’s where the writers are going with it,” says Reid. “Phil is getting a bit older now, although let’s not say that to Steve McFadden’s face! But if someone were to run away from Phil, would he go after them himself or send in his two boys?”

Of his hopes for what lies ahead in the storylines, Reid adds: “I feel it would be nice if Phil were to eventually take a step back and let these two grow up and start to take control. Ben and Jay could have what Phil and Grant had, but possibly with a stronger bond as there isn’t that worry of a woman getting between them.”

Next week’s episodes will see Ben and Jay fretting after Denise digs up Lucy Beale’s wallet and mobile phone, the two items that the boys were seen burying some months ago. So does this discovery point to Ben being exposed as a killer come the soap’s 30th anniversary in February 2015?

“Well I hope he won’t get caught if he is the killer because I will be out of a job,” laughs Reid. “I want him to be involved because I think it would make for an interesting twist, bearing in mind that he was Lucy’s uncle. But I don’t think he’d be so stupid to come out of prison and kill someone straight away. So, yes, I do want him to be involved, but I really can’t see him being the killer.”
