EastEnders: Gillian Taylforth – “Maybe Kathy is still alive”

As Ian's mum returns for a Children In Need sketch, the actress who plays her chats to Radio Times about a Walford comeback

Gillian Taylforth has revealed that she has started to doubt whether her EastEnders character Kathy Mitchell is really dead.

“I have so many viewers asking me, ‘Why don’t you come back?’ And when I tell them that Kathy died off screen, they reply, ‘Well, we don’t know you’re dead then, do we?’ So, you do start to think, ‘Maybe people don’t know she’s dead. Maybe she’s still alive’,” the actress tells Radio Times. “I’ve had people write to me with storylines suggesting how Kathy could come back. And I say that they should write to EastEnders. So who knows?”

Kathy may have met her maker in an off-screen road accident in 2006, but Taylforth – who originally appeared on the BBC1 soap between 1985 and 2000 – is set to reappear as Kathy as part of a special Children in Need sketch that will see Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) haunted by women from Walford’s past. Also set to appear in the mini episode are Michelle Collins [Cindy], Pam St Clement [Pat] and Hetti Bywater [Lucy].

Of her experience being back on the EastEnders set in Elstree, Taylforth – more recently of C4 soap Hollyoaks –  adds: “As soon as I got into the caff, put on my apron and Kathy’s old earrings and got stirring those beans, it was like I’d never been away. It was wonderful. Adam Woodyatt said to me, ‘I can’t tell you how great it is to have you back’. He’s a lovely lad. He still calls me mum.”

Kathy, Cindy, Lucy and Pat confirmed to return for Children in Need special

Adam Woodyatt: “I wouldn’t buy it if Ian turned out to be Lucy’s killer”

The EastEnders Children in Need sketch will be broadcast on Friday 14 November on BBC1. The new issue of Radio Times is out today
