EastEnders spoilers: Sonia returns to support Carol in cancer battle – first look pictures

Poignant scenes set to air later this month mark Natalie Cassidy's reappearance on the BBC1 soap

Emotional scenes to be aired in the coming weeks will see Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson) turning up on daughter Sonia’s (Natalie Cassidy) doorstep to tell the news about her breast cancer diagnosis. As she tries to put on a brave face, Carol insists that she is coping, but it isn’t long before she breaks down as her family tries to comfort her.

The episode – which will broadcast on Wednesday 15 January – marks actress Natalie Cassidy’s return to the BBC1 soap. Speaking about Sonia’s reappearance, Cassidy said: “After seven years being out of the show, apart from the odd episode, I am extremely excited and honoured to be making a full-time return. I feel so lucky as an actress to get back to my roots. With Dominic Treadwell-Collins as executive producer, it’s such an exciting time for the show. I cannot wait to work with Patsy Palmer and Lindsey Coulson again. Bring it on!”

The new images released by the BBC also highlight the debut of Jasmine Armfield as Sonia’s daughter Rebecca. Show bosses have described the teenaged character as “well-behaved but also a little fighter”. Following in the footsteps of her trumpet-playing mum, Rebecca is passionate about music and someone who can play the guitar beautifully. Although she wants to do well in life and make her parents proud, Rebecca’s determination will be “the making or undoing of her”.
