EastEnders to reflect the death of Nelson Mandela

A specially filmed scene will air during tonight's episode

EastEnders is to mark the death of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela with a scene featuring stars Diane Parish and Lindsey Coulson.

The specially filmed sequence, which will air during this evening’s episode, will see Carol Jackson and Denise Fox discussing the former South African president – who died last Thursday at the age of 95 – and where they were when he was released from prison in 1990.

A spokesperson for the BBC1 soap said of the scene: “EastEnders always aims to reflect big news stories and events that strike a chord with our audience. Nelson Mandela had such a huge effect on so many people’s lives that we felt it was important to reflect the impact his death has had.”

This is not the first time that EastEnders has covered real-life events with last-minute inserts. Previous historical moments that have been marked in specially shot scenes include the birth of Prince George, the death of the Queen Mother, Andy Murray’s win at Wimbledon and the election of Barack Obama.
