David Tennant beats Matt Smith to best actor award

But EastEnders and Doctor Who are biggest winners

It was clash of the Time Lords last night, and the winner was… David Tennant.

OK, so it wasn’t strictly a head-to-head, who’s-the-best-Doctor competition, but Matt Smith and his predecessor Tennant were vying for a best actor gong, and it was the latter who came out on top, scooping the prize for his performance in BBC1 drama Single Father.

But while Matt Smith left empty-handed, Doctor Who still managed a couple of successes. Smith’s co-star, Karen Gillan, took the best actress award for her role as Amy Pond, and the show itself was named best family drama.

Meanwhile, EastEnders was the biggest winner at the TV Choice Awards, triumphing in the best soap category and landing the best soap actor and actress prizes for Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace, who play Alfie and Kat Moon.
