Johnny Depp begins filming Mortdecai with Ewan McGregor and Gwyneth Paltrow

Depp is playing Kyril Bonfligioli's anti-hero, unscrupulous art dealer Charles Mortdecai, in the action-comedy

Shooting has begun on Mortdecai, a new action-comedy based on an anthology book series by Kril Bonfiglioli, with Johnny Depp in the title role. David Koepp, who worked with Depp on the psychological thriller Secret Window, is directing the film.

Joining Depp on the picture is an all-star cast that includes Ewan McGregor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany and Olivia Munn.

Depp is playing the role of Charles Mortdecai, the fictional character who appeared in four books by British-born author Bonfligioli. He’s an unscrupulous art dealer and lovable rogue who will traverse the world in search of a painting containing a secret code revealing the whereabouts of hidden Nazi treasure.

It’s not difficult to imagine the actor fondly known as the charmingly troublesome Captain Jack Sparrow in such a role. Mortdecai sounds like Indiana Jones filtered through the wild imagination of a child, and seeing as Koepp has directed an Indiana Jones film, and Depp is no stranger to channeling childlike exuberance, it sounds like a match made in heaven.
