Helena Bonham Carter to play the fairy godmother in Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella

The Lone Ranger actress joins Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden, Lily James and Sophie McShera in the new adaptation

Helena Bonham Carter has a long and impressive fantasy film CV (as you might expect from someone partnered with Tim Burton), having recently lent her talents to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland. Now the British actress has joined her former partner Kenneth Branagh’s production of Cinderella, playing the fairy godmother alongside a rich cast lined up to retell the classic fairytale.

Downton Abbey newcomer Lily James will play the title role, alongside Cate Blanchett’s wicked stepmother Lady Tremaine and Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden’s dashing Prince Charming.

Fellow Downton alumnus Sophie McShera has signed up as an ugly stepsister, along with Bonham Carter’s Great Expectations co-star Holliday Grainger.

The live action Disney production is taking full advantage of Bonham Carter’s skill set by boosting her screentime, with the fairy godmother initially disguised as an old beggar who watches over Cinderella before revealing her true magical self.

Cinderella is scheduled to shoot in London this Autumn although an official release date is yet to be confirmed.
