The upcoming storyline sees Phelan and dodgy businessman Vinny (played by former Doctors and Emmerdale star Ian Kelsey) team up for a scam that will take advantage of the Corrie locals.

“Phelan is a bad man with a bad scam. He will clearly bring others down for his own pleasure,” says producer Kate Oates. “In cahoots with Vinny, they’re planning on building a development and selling properties off to locals. But it’s all a big scam – they intend to abscond with everyones money. Eileen will fall from a great height if Phelan gets his way.”

However, help for the unsuspecting Street regulars could come from an unlikely source – Todd Grimshaw, who isn’t a stranger to a bit of scheming himself, will become the likeliest contender to take Phelan down.

“Todd is a match for Phelan and there’s a nice, uncomfortable, constant tension that works well,” adds Oates. “Todd has smelt blood and knows Phelan isn’t to be trusted. He’s out to protect his mum, so he’s a thorn in Phelan’s side. But how far will Phelan and Vinnie go to remove that thorn?”

As for how long Phelan can remain on the ITV soap without getting his comeuppance, Oates comments: “Well, Carl King on Emmerdale was a killer and he remained on that show for ages.

“You can get longevity from evil characters. What Phelan did to Anna was appalling and yet here is. Connor McIntyre is playing him with real subtlety and, as long as you tell stories like this in rewarding chapters, then you can get longevity from those kind of characters.”
