Coronation Street: Ken and Audrey’s relationship will be “like Ross and Rachel in Friends”

Show boss Stuart Blackburn reveals that Audrey is to develop feelings for Ken over the coming months

It’s one of the most famous courtships in sitcom history, but can Ken Barlow and Audrey Roberts hope to emulate Ross and Rachel’s will-they-won’t-they relationship from Friends?

Rumours began circulating last month that salon owner Audrey will develop feelings for widower Ken after he begins dating newcomer Nessa, the sister of Cathy Williams.

Now, Corrie producer Stuart Blackburn has revealed new details of the upcoming Weatherfield love triangle.

“It’s going to be a bit like Ross and Rachel in Friends. There will be a lot of barriers, and Audrey won’t want to act on her feelings as she feels it’s too soon after Deirdre’s death. But when Cathy’s sister Nessa comes in, she’ll have no such qualms,” he said to Inside Soap.

Blackburn’s words come following comments made by a show insider in the Mirror: “Ken Barlow has always been a lothario on the Street and nothing has changed.

“After the death of Deirdre, Ken starts to spend more and more time with Audrey and she admits to Rita she wants to be with him all the time. Audrey feels very mixed up because she feels there’s something between them but she feels guilty because Deirdre was her friend and she hasn’t long died.

“There is a chance Audrey could finally be lucky in love after years without a partner.”

Next week’s episodes of Coronation Street will see Ken come to Audrey’s rescue after she’s harassed by Callum’s thugs at the salon. So could this be the first sign of friendship turning to romance for the pair?
