Coronation Street viewers were left on the edge of their seats last night when the verdict in the Nathan Curtis trial was delivered.
There was relief all round when the grooming storyline involving Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) finally came to a conclusion, and Nathan (Christopher Harper) and the rest of the sexual exploitation gang were all found guilty of rape and conspiracy to commit rape.
Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) stood up to testify against Nathan, while the attacker lied through his teeth on the stand. Nathan went against his barrister’s recommendations and testified, only to be caught out by prosecution lawyers.
A link was made between money found on Nathan at the time of his arrest and the jury found him guilty. Viewers were incredibly relieved and emotional at the fraught scenes that saw Bethany break down in tears after the verdict was read out.
“My time on Coronation Street is coming to an end, but I’m genuinely happy that [producer] Kate Oates and the team will continue to show the conflict and troubles that affect Bethany,” he said. “All that will carry on.
“Having now met so many survivors, I’m really pleased that Bethany’s journey continues. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next.”
Coronation Street continues Friday October 6 on ITV.
