The Last Post Jessica Raine

New pictures have been revealed of Call the Midwife star Jessica Raine in BBC1’s new military drama, The Last Post.

Penned by the Bafta-winning writer Peter Moffat (Criminal Justice, Silk), The Last Post is set in 1960s Yemen and is based on Moffat’s childhood memories of his father’s career as an officer in the Royal Military Police and his mother’s struggle between being what the army required her to be and what she felt like being.

The job of the RMP is two-fold: half soldiers and half policemen who face constant insurgency and threat just as the sixties and sexual liberation are getting into full swing.

Raine plays Alison, a woman ahead of her time who has been described as feeling “cooped up and claustrophobic”, with a combination of “gin, red lipstick and other men” than her husband giving Alison what she feels she needs.

It’s a racy role for the actress, whose credits include Call the Midwife, Wolf Hall, Fortitude and Jericho, to name a few.

Starring alongside Raine will be Jessie Buckley (War and Peace), Amanda Drew (Broadchurch), Ben Miles (The Crown) and Stephen Campbell Moore (History Boys)‎.

The six-part drama begins on Sunday 1st October at 9pm on BBC1
