Benedict Cumberbatch in The Current War

The trailer for Benedict Cumberbatch movie The Current War is finally here – and it’s electric!

Well, specifically, it’s about electricity. The movie features Cumberbatch’s Thomas Edison and Michael Shannon’s George Westinghouse locked in battle over a brand new discovery, with each wanting to take control of how it shapes the future.

Set in 1879, it tells the story of a real-life struggle between the two men which would have huge consequences. Edison championed the use of direct current (DC) for electric-power distribution, instead of the alternating current (AC) favoured by Westinghouse Electric and many European companies. Sounds technical, but it looks like The Current Wars will be anything but dry.

And at the end of the trailer, just when you think the narrative has taken shape, we get the sudden appearance of Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult) with his cocky declaration, “I fix problems for idiots”.

Also lighting up the screen will be Katherine Waterston as Marguerite Westinghouse, and Spider-Man’s Tom Holland.

The Current War will be released in the UK on 5th January 2018
