Hollyoaks’ trial week reached a sensational climax as Ste Hay was found innocent of the murder of Amy Barnes, but was shot by the deceased’s grieving mum Kathy outside the courtroom and ended up fighting for his life in hospital.
There have been numerous twists and turns over the last five episodes, including the revelation that crooked lawyer James Nightingale had known all along Ste’s lover Harry Thompson was the real killer, then agreeing to cover up the crime and frame Amy’s stalker Gavin Armstrong to save Harry from prison and set Ste free.
Tonight’s grand finale saw the jury deliver a ‘not guilty’ verdict and the finger pointing firmly at evil Armstrong. But there was a sting in the tale as crazed Kathy, convinced Ste did it and desperate to avenge her daughter’s memory, shot the accused with the gun she found yesterday at the beach.
As trigger-happy Kathy was arrested, Ste was rushed to hospital for life-saving surgery. Doctors managed to remove the bullet and Ste survived, but there was heartbreak for him and Harry as Mr Hay made the decision to dump his boyfriend, unable to deal with the fact he had accidentally caused the death of the mother of his children.
However, the episode ended with yet another twist: a further flashback to a previously unseen moment from the night Amy was killed showed she regained consciousness after Harry pushed her and left her for dead – attempting to call 999 for help, a shadowy figure entered the room as a worried Amy turned to meet their gaze…
Does this mean there was more to her demise than we first thought? Did Harry really do it after all? How did Amy Barnes really die? Case closed? Not yet…
Hollyoaks continues weeknights on E4 at 7pm and on Channel 4 at 6.30pm.
