But as the trial kicks off in this evening’s first-look episode (featuring the return of Amy’s mum Kathy), James’s seemingly-deliberate poor performance in court and Ryan’s unexpectedly fierce defence of Ste leads to the penny dropping at last for the accused.

The trial continues into next week with the verdict being announced on Thursday, and Hollyoaks have teased there are many twists and turns in store between now and then as we get closer to the learning the identity of Amy’s killer – and finding out what the future holds for Ste. Could he actually be guilty after all this? Or is someone else responsible for the crime?

Elsewhere, Ste’s sister Tegan is suspicious that Amy’s kids Leah and Lucas are hiding something. With Ryan’s support she tries to get to the bottom of what’s going on – when Leah eventually reveals a huge secret, Tegan is stunned…

What has the traumatised little girl been keeping to herself? Will it affect her dad’s trial? Could it hold the key to her mother’s murder?
