Soap boss Kate Oates reveals when we’ll see new Coronation Street set extension

Plus new details on what will be on screen

Coronation Street producer Kate Oates has revealed that the extension to the soap’s set will be unveiled on screen next year.

The new exterior space will come following the soap’s move to six episodes a week from this autumn.

Speaking in the new issue of Radio Times, Oates said: “There’ll be an extension that will go beyond Victoria Court. You’ll start seeing it from early Spring. In fact, we’re in discussions at the moment about how to reveal it.

“If you have a character on a tracking shot walking down this new stretch of street, will the nations’ head explode? Will there be viewers yelling, ‘where the hell are you going? You’re going to fall off!’? Perhaps we’ll just drip feed it in until everyone’s up to speed.”

Coronation Street’s latest set at Media City in Salford was unveiled in November 2013, the first time the drama had moved from its previous base at Quay Street in central Manchester.

Work is now well in progress to give viewers a fresh look at life in Weatherfield that will come after the addition of the extra weekly half hour of drama. As to what Corrie devotees can expect to see, Oates added:

“What we’ll get though are a couple of new businesses and there’ll also be a little park where we’ll have a special bench dedicated to Martyn Hett [the Coronation Street superfan who died in the Manchester Arena bombing] and all the other people who lost their lives in May.”
