Luc Besson pays tribute to his favourite childhood comic with a visually spectacular sci-fi romp that strays wildly from the source material and shamelessly flaunts its suite of special effects. Valerian is a high-octane, high-camp space opera peopled by innumerable and brilliantly-rendered alien lifeforms. Fifth Element fans are in for a treat.
Four very different former college friends get together and head off to a New Orleans music festival. A seriously funny female ensemble push the limits of taste, just as their characters push the boundaries of what’s considered acceptable behaviour for women hitting their 40s. Bawdy humour, notably involving fruit and fluids, comes thick and fast with a shedload of cameo celebs.
Tour operators for cage dives will hate this movie. A story about two female friends trapped in a cage on the ocean floor is never going to be good for business. That they’re circled by bloodthirsty sharks probably ensures that some of those tours will be quiet this year. Marine biologists might hate it too, since these are movie sharks who attack on sight and can smell your fear.
