The rape trial of Pierce Harris took a twist in tonight’s Emmerdale when the accused denied any wrongdoing as he took to the stand, despite admitting to his crime to wife Rhona Goskirk earlier in private.

In the first of tonight’s double bill, Rhona confronted her villainous husband in secret, minutes before he was due to give evidence, and during an emotional showdown pushed him to finally admit he knew she had not consented to sex. Begging him to do the right thing and repeat his admission in court, Rhona entered the gallery hopeful Pierce would tell the truth and her ordeal would be over.

But Pierce’s all-too-familiar manipulative streak resurfaced and despite confessing to the rape away from the jury, and an initial wavering as his gaze met Rhona’s in the gallery, he stuck to his story that he and Rhona had consensual sex on their wedding night – and that she had betrayed him with ex Paddy Kirk.

The calculating control freak then struggled to keep his cool as the prosecution’s persistence revealed flaws in Pierce’s testimony that cast doubt on his version of events.

The verdict is set to be revealed in tomorrow’s episode, and is sure to be a nail-biting climax to one of the biggest soap stories of the year.

But will Rhona get the justice she deserves, or will Pierce escape punishment?
