David Lean? Sweeping epics and casts of thousands. But before all that heavy lifting, he shot this modest holiday romance entirely on location in Venice. Katharine Hepburn’s Ohio schoolteacher is the American abroad who initially resists the overtures of Rossano Brazzi’s chivalrous antique-shop owner but gradually thaws. It’s a sumptuous, chaste, Technicolor love letter to Italy (United Artists had to sweeten the authorities to film at top tourist locations) that shows Hepburn’s softer side, while Brazzi – best known for Three Coins in the Fountain – proves a warm and appealing leading man. As with Lean’s classic Brief Encounter, there’s a torrid train platform scene.
