Reformed supervillain Gru has a lot on his plate for this threequel: the return of a bratty but elusive bad guy; the appearance of his long-lost twin brother Dru, who wants him to return to the dark side; and the departure of his disgruntled Minions, fed up with being do-gooders. That’s not even accounting for a new wife and his three orphan daughters…
It was only a matter to time before Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright turned his genre-bending eye to the American heist movie. Ansel Elgort is the eponymous Baby, permanently tuned in to his iPod, whose vehicular va-va-voom puts him in the pocket of Kevin Spacey’s kind-of-scary crime boss. Breathless car chases, barmy bank robbers (Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm) and a killer soundtrack guarantee there aren’t many lulls in the action.
Tilda Swinton and Jake Gyllenhaal head the cast of this Netflix sci-fi that caused a bit of a stir at Cannes in May. A young girl befriends a cute hippo/pig hybrid that unfortunately is not meant for human companionship but rather human consumption, if Swinton’s callous corporate CEO has her way. Lassie, ET and even Pete’s Dragon may come to mind here, but director Bong Joon-ho includes gruesomely grown-up elements among the whimsy to give us all food for thought.
