Tonight actor Richard Harrington – otherwise known as Poldark’s Captain Andrew Blamey – is back in Abertystwyth as DCI Tom Mathias in series two of Welsh thriller Hinterland or Y Gwyll.
“Every character you portray as an actor, you can’t get rid of your own personality,” he says. “I have to love every character I play, even if they’re tyrants.”
Mathias is no tyrant but, like all the best TV detectives, he is a deeply troubled chap. Series one saw the detective chief inspector arrive in Aberystwyth after ten years at the London Met, a man cast into the wilderness of his own making.
Filmed on location in the bleakly beautiful hinterland of Ceredigion, west Wales, Hinterland proved a hit both in its homeland and beyond, and has since been sold to over 30 countries. Series two has once again been made bilingually – every scene is filmed in both Welsh and English. (The English-language version will be broadcast on BBC Wales and BBC4 at a later date.)
Ahead of its return, Harrington, his fellow cast members and the creators reveal what’s in store second time round:
Series two of Hinterland begins on Sunday 13th September at 9pm on S4C, Sky 104 and Freeview 4, TV 166 and Freesat 104.
