Undead sailors under the command of Javier Bardem’s vengeful ghoul are hungry to wreak vengeance on Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow in the fifth adventure for the befuddled buccaneer. Former friends and foes (Geoffrey Rush’s Barbossa, Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner) are along for a typically rambunctious ride, and look out, too, for a cameo from a bona fide British rock legend.
It’s debatable whether anyone took the hugely popular TV show that seriously back in the 1990s, but this reboot is definitely going for tongue-in-cheek chuckles among waves of elaborate action and slow-motion running. Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron are suitably well sculpted as the bickering lifeguards trying to get to the bottom of local skulduggery.
A Studio Ghibli co-production, this animated meditation on solitude and man’s relationship with the natural world sees a sailor shipwrecked on a tropical island and struggling to adapt to his isolated new home. No fun cartoon characters here, just nature red in tooth and claw.
