Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey go head-to-head in first trailer for The Dark Tower

After having its release date pushed back, the highly-anticipated movie will be in UK cinemas on 18th August

Anticipation surrounding The Dark Tower has been growing ever since it was announced that Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey had been cast in the film.

Now we’ve got our first look at Elba’s gunslinger Roland Deschain and McConaughey’s Man in Black in action in the movie’s first trailer.

The adaptation of the Stephen King novel mixes western with horror and sci-fi and focuses on a dark tower, which protects both the world we know and a far more mysterious land called Mid-World.

“If it falls,” says Elba’s Roland. “Hell will be unleashed.”

Roland is the last living member of the gunslingers, and it is his job to find this tower before it can be destroyed by The Man in Black.

Speaking about having his novel adapted for the silver screen, King said last year: “The thing is, it’s been a long trip from the books to the film.

“When you think about it, I started these stories as a senior in college, sitting in a little sh***y cabin beside the river in Maine, and finally this thing is actually in pre-production now.  I’m delighted, and I’m a little bit surprised.”

It’s been a bumpy road for The Dark Tower, which has seen its release date get moved back twice.

The movie was originally being developed by JJ Abrams, however Ron Howard replaced him in the role in 2010. In 2015 it was announced that Nikolaj Arcel would direct with Howard remaining in a producing role.
