Freeview film of the day: Life

The story of how photographer Dennis Stock captured James Dean on camera, mere months before he died

Life ★★★★
Premiere 10.50pm-1.05am Film4

It’s as if director and world-renowned rock photographer Anton Corbijn intended with his fourth feature to bring to life the iconic photograph taken by Dennis Stock in 1955, freeze-framing James Dean in New York’s wintry Times Square just months before his tragic death in a car crash. Luke Davies’s playful original screenplay maps the story of their whirlwind bromance, with Dane DeHaan uncanny as the taciturn Dean and Robert Pattinson convincing as his controlling chronicler on the road from Los Angeles to Indiana via NYC, all stylishly framed by Corbijn. Ironically, the historic session in the Big Apple was re-created in Toronto, proving that the movie camera does lie.
