3:10 to Yuma ★★★★
Dan Evans (Christian Bale), an impoverished, one-legged farmer, seeks financial salvation by helping escort Ben Wade (Russell Crowe), a notorious killer and bank robber, to jail in Yuma. But so many people are out to kill either him or Wade that it’s touch and go whether they’ll make it on to the 3.10 train. Based on an Elmore Leonard short story, this was first made 50 years earlier with Van Heflin and Glenn Ford in the Bale and Crowe roles. Rather better made, actually, with considerably less violence and more emphasis on the relationship between the two men. This one is good but more brutal and marred by a baffling climactic gunfight in which it’s hard to tell who is killing whom and why.
