Set post-Revenge of the Sith (hooray!), this supposed one-off sci-fi extravaganza charts the derring-do that preceded the original 1977 Star Wars film. Felicity Jones stars as a doughty heroine whose connection to the genesis of the planet-killing Death Star drives her on a Magnificent Seven-like mission to thwart the Empire’s evil plans. A certain chesty villain probably won’t be too far away, either…
If you enjoyed the acclaimed 2002 movie Whale Rider which related how a young Maori girl rousingly bucked an ancestral male trend, then this beautifully photographed documentary should appeal. Set in the Altai mountains on the border of Mongolia and Kazakhstan, it chronicles how the female heir of an old champion hunter challenges the patriarchal traditions of her nomadic tribe. A real-life underdog story but magical, nonetheless.
An orphan with dreams of becoming a ballerina runs away to 1880s Paris in an animated musical adventure that should keep prospective Darcey Bussell’s on point. Maleficent star Elle Fanning voices spunky heroine Felicie while Dance Moms breakout star Maddie Ziegler makes her movie debut as bratty archival Camille.
