EastEnders: a dying Phil suffers a huge health setback – here’s what happens next

Will this Christmas be Phil's last?

An ailing Phil Mitchell received bad news in tonight’s EastEnders when doctors told him that a liver they’d received for a possible transplant was not, in fact, suitable.

After being taken to hospital in preparation for an operation, Phil was then discharged, still unsure about whether he’ll live long enough for a viable donor to be found.

Viewers then saw Phil grow ever-more determined to make Christmas special, even standing up to a social worker who’d call round to ask questions about Jay’s living arrangements.

But EastEnders fans shouldn’t expect Phil’s good mood to hold. By Christmas Day, with his health rapidly deteriorating and time running out, the Mitchell family is facing the prospect of Phil not lasting much longer.

With Ben opting to eat at the Beales’, the Mitchells sit down for what they hope will be the perfect Christmas dinner. But the cracks soon start to show and Sharon will be seen struggling to hold the family together. So will this be Phil’s last Christmas?

Teasing the upcoming drama, actor Jamie Borthwick – who plays Jay – said recently to RadioTimes.com:  “It’s a tense time with Phil, because he’s saying that it’s going to be his last Christmas. So everyone is on tenterhooks. And we don’t know what the outcome is going to be.”
