Here is the first image of Nicole Kidman in the new series of Top of the Lake.
The Mrs Dalloway and Days of Thunder actress plays an Australian mother, Julia, whose story “will intersect with” the part of Detective Robin Griffin played by Mad Men star Elisabeth Moss, according to the BBC.
Top of the Lake: China Girl is a crime mystery story that begins four years on from the explosive ending of series one, and also stars Games of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie in a “major role”.
The new story follows Griffin, recently returned to Sydney and trying to rebuild her life. But when the body of an Asian girl washes up on Bondi Beach, there appears little hope of finding the killer, until Robin realises “China Girl” didn’t die alone.
“Robin’s search to discover “China Girl’s” identity takes her into the city’s criminal underbelly and closer than she could have imagined to the secrets of her own heart,” added the Corporation in a teaser.
The new series will once again be directed by Jane Campion (Bright Star, The Piano), who co-writes as well.
The first series of Top of the Lake won the 2013 Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography as well as the 2014 Golden Globe best actress award for Moss.
Top of the Lake: China Girl will broadcast on BBC2 in 2017
