5 Marvel Easter Eggs hidden in the first Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer

As Peter Parker searches for his inner hero, we search for secret movie callbacks. Just as worthwhile, really

The first trailer for upcoming Marvel reboot Spider-Man: Homecoming has arrived, and it’s chock-full of the kind of quips, charm and actions fans have long been waiting for from the wall-crawler.

However, there’s a bit more than meets the eye in the footage (especially if you include the international trailer’s slightly different clips) – because scattered amongst the web-swinging, John Hughes-esque dialogue and Robert Downey Jr swagger are some special hints and Easter Eggs relating to the wider Marvel universe.

Starting with…

Brucie bonus

Tony Stark might be front-and-centre in the trailer’s action, but he’s not the only Avenger to make an appearance. If you look closely at one classroom scene, Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner (aka the Hulk) can be seen included in a row of pictures of famous scientists, presumably there to inspire the kids into becoming verdant anger monsters themselves one day.

A Stark reminder

Banner isn’t the only Marvel character to appear in a picture cameo – Tony Stark’s father Howard also turns up in a mural at Peter’s (Tom Hollander) school, in his older John Slattery incarnation (as seen in Iron Man 2, Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War) rather than the younger version played by Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Agent Carter).

Hot under the collar

We see a bit of Michael Keaton’s villain The Vulture in the new trailer (though much more in the international version), and one detail in particular from his outfit calls back to his classic comic-book look – the fluffy silhouette of his collar (see above), which resembles the appearance of the bird he’s named after.

Also, you know, it’s still a green outfit with wings so it was never going to look THAT different.

Shocking stuff

And the Vulture’s not the only classic villain bothering Peter this time around, with the footage showing tech-savvy criminal The Tinkerer (aka Phineas Mason, played by Michael Chernus, right) unleashing one of his devices and the gauntleted shocker (aka Herman Schultz, played by Bokeem Woodbine) powering up his trademark handheld shockwave gloves.

Interestingly, both men appear to be wearing versions of The Shocker’s classic padded safety suit (see below), suggesting that they developed their tech around the same time (as does the fact that The Vulture seems to be recruiting them as his henchmen in the international trailer).

Oh, and it also seems like Donald Glover’s mysterious character is working with the Tinkerer based on the footage, so it’s possible he could be playing a pre-existing Spider-Man villain himself.

And finally… opposites attract

Now this is a bit of a funny one. In the trailer Peter wears a couple of nerdy T-shirts, but one in particular has us scratching our heads.

You see, a Tumblr user noticed that the T-shirt Peter is wearing when he walks and talks with Tony Stark has appeared in a Marvel movie before, on a DIFFERENT character close to Iron Man.

Yep, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts had the exact same T-shirt on during Iron Man 3, and it raises all sorts of questions. Did they both borrow the same shirt from Tony? Did Pepper leave it behind when she left, and did Tony give it to Peter as a really creepy gift? Or did they both perhaps just find the T-shirt’s science joke (below) hilarious?

Oh, what a tangled web this film is weaving.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released on the 7th July 2017
