Famous for: Terrorising the Mitchell clan on EastEnders as the evil Archie Mitchell, being killed off by Stacey Slater, and playing Gavin’s dad, Mick Shipman, in Gavin & Stacey.
Essex boy Larry discovered acting while he was working in the oil industry in Libya and Canada.
When he returned to England he made his soap debut in North Sea ferry-based soap Triangle, and went on to feature in the likes of The New Avengers, The Professionals, Fox, Minder, Lovejoy, Get Back, A Touch of Frost, Our Friends in the North, Taggart, Casualty, Kavanagh QC, Spooks, Midsomer Murders, and The Bill.
Lamb hit the jackpot when he landed the role of Mick Shipman, Gavin’s father, in BBC3 comedy Gavin & Stacey.
He’s probably best known to many as EastEnders’ Archie Mitchell, though. Lamb based his portrayal of the overbearing and sometimes abusive father of Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell’s on his own dad, famously terrorising new wife Peggy and driving one Albert Square’s residents to murder during the Christmas 2009 broadcast.
His killer, Stacey Slater, was famously unmasked in the show’s 25th Anniversary live episode in February 2010 – and Lamb was on hand to talk about his big exit with his son, radio presenter George Lamb, in a special aftermath episode.
Lamb later joined the cast of New Tricks as Ted Case for series 12, and also began presenting a Sunday morning radio show on LBC.
Oh, and he was actually in Superman III, believe it or not. You’ll get your best glimpse of him at the 1 minute 34 second mark or so.
