Alison Steadman has branded her Gavin and Stacey co-star Larry Lamb a “hero” as he battles through I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’s fiendish Bushtucker Trials and faces the hardships of the Australian jungle.
Lamb played Gavin’s dad Mick alongside Steadman as overprotective mum Pam in the BBC sitcom, which finished on New Year’s Day in 2010 – and despite not actually watching ITV’s I’m A Celebrity, she is still proud as punch of her on-screen spouse.
“The jungle thing? People keep telling me about it. I must get the old catch-up and have a look at that, actually,” she told RadioTimes.com.
“My sister said he is amazing. She said, he just dived into this pool to help somebody, and he’s cooking – he is a hero, Larry.
“He’s always been someone who in a crisis situation will just keep calm and do the right thing. He’s brilliant like that.”
Lamb, who at 69 has become the father figure in the I’m A Celebrity camp, has so far survived three evictions.
“He’s a very practical guy,” Steadman added. “He can build things, make things. He’s amazing.”
Not that Steadman will be following in Lamb’s footsteps any time soon.
The 70-year-old, who recently won the Richard Harris Award and who is set for a guest appearance in the Yonderland Christmas special, has categorically ruled out a stint in the Australian jungle.
“I think I can say with capital letters, NO,” she said.
“I do a lot of things but I would not do that. No. I’m not afraid of snakes and I’m not afraid of insects – in fact I love reptiles and I love spiders and I can happily have them on my hand. I’m not squeamish.
“But it’s just not me. I’m not a very adventurous person. I couldn’t go jumping out of aeroplanes with parachutes, or even eating locust and all that.”
Leave that to Larry…
The Yonderland Christmas special will air at 6.30pm on 24th December on Sky1. I’m A Celebrity continues on ITV at 9pm.
