Coronation Street star Rhea Bailey has revealed that she regularly receives abuse from fans thanks to the machinations of her character Caz Hammond.
Manipulative Caz is currently embroiled in a Gone Girl-style plotline that has seen her frame a beleaguered Maria for murder. And it seems that some Corrie fans have trouble separating the truth from fiction.
Speaking about playing stalker Caz, Bailey said: “It comes with a lot more baggage than I expected. A lot of people who watch the show have a hard time differentiating between actors and the characters they play.
“I find that quite difficult to be honest. That wasn’t something I was prepared for.”
Next week’s episodes of the ITV soap will see Caz lured back to the Street by Kate, who finally realises that her ex has been setting Maria up for a crime she didn’t commit.
However, soap bosses are currently remaining tight-lipped as to whether Caz will face justice for her crimes.
It seems though that viewers are crying out for Caz to get her comeuppance – and are definitely venting their feelings when they encounter the actress who plays her.
Added Bailey: “I can be out doing my shopping and suddenly I’m getting called names in the supermarket. If you’re seen to complain too much, people will think, ‘What’s she complaining about? She’s on the telly, so she must have a great life.’ But I didn’t sign up for this. However, I am getting more used to it now.”
