The official trailer for Netflix’s TV adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events is here, and it’s looking as fantastical as you’d expect.
Adapted from the Lemony Snicket books – loved by both kids and grown-ups – it stars Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf, the evil-incarnate villain out to steal the Baudelaire children’s fortune.
The books, the first of which was published in 1999, tell the story of siblings Violet, Klaus and Sunny, who are sent to live with Count Olaf after their parents perish in a fire. However, they soon realise that the count doesn’t have their best interests at heart and are forced to go on the run, finding out the mysteries of their parents’ past in the process.
A movie franchise of the books starring Jim Carrey as the count and Jude Law as narrator Lemony Snicket was launched then shelved in 2002, and it’s good to see the TV version has maintained the film’s fantasy-goth aesthetics.
The first season of the show will be released on Netflix in January 2017 and will cover the first four of the 13 books, with two episodes per book.
