Well, the answer is probably on the golf course because tonight I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! 2016 takes a break from its nightly broadcasts in order to make way for England versus Spain at Wembley Stadium.
Gareth Southgate has one last chance to impress his FA paymasters in tonight’s match against Spain. Not that an international friendly is really an indicator of whether he can do the job full time; England’s timid steps through the World Cup qualifiers are of far greater concern.
It’s the second time in a year that England have faced Spain in a friendly; in 2015, Raheem Sterling had just become the most expensive English player in history but struggled to assert himself as England lost 2–0 away in Alicante.
This year, Sterling has flourished under his new – Spanish – boss at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola. This is exactly England’s problem isn’t it? A player who can play with such freedom and expression for his club, but clams up as soon as he plays for his country. Getting full value from Sterling and the rest could yet earn Southgate a job. – James Gill
