A glorious Ealing black comedy directed by Alexander Mackendrick and written by the Oscar-nominated William Rose. Alec Guinness leads a motley gang of crooks plotting a robbery in the King’s Cross area.In preparation, they lodge in the home of endearing but nosey old Katie Johnson and claim to be a string quintet in rehearsal. The raid succeeds but Johnson smells a rat and says she is going to the police so the gang decides to kill her. The botch they make of this is hilarious stuff. A great cast includes Peter Sellers, Cecil Parker and Herbert Lom. But Guinness and Johnson are outstanding.
