The Great British Bake Off 2016 contestant: Jane Beedle
Having won Star Baker in week one, Jane was off to a good start. She has been one of the most consistent bakers in the tent, but has flown under the radar a little – quietly making her way into the final. With great technical knowledge and a good understanding of baking, will she be the next Nancy Birtwhistle?
Garden designer Jane lives in Beckenham, Kent with her husband Ray. Her children, Amy and Henry, are grown up and away at university, meaning she now bakes much less. How much less? Oh, only three loaves and two cakes a week. Pretty standard.
Her passion for baking comes from her grandfather who owned a bakery in Hastings – her father also had the baking bug, and as a six-year-old she used to watch her dad pipe and ice the cakes.
Bake Off journey
Becoming Star Baker in week one was an unexpected bonus when her chocolate mirror glaze cake left everybody stunned. So shiny!
Jane told the Radio Times: “My fear was that I would go out first week so to win Star Baker far exceeded my expectations.”
The amateur baker kept things up with a solid performance all the way through the series, only really struggling in Botanical Week, when Paul thought her three-tier floral cake with a floral chocolate collar looked like colourful mashed potato, and patisserie week, when nothing quite went right.
Though she takes fewer risks than Andrew or Candice, Jane will go into the final as a solid, consistent, very talented baker.
