One wonders if perhaps the young-adult audience for the automatic film adaptations of novels about teens in Lycra battling quasi-fascistic regimes has been stretched to breaking point. The dystopian, Chicago-set Divergent trilogy, written by Veronica Roth, has thus far stretched to three films, the most recent of which, Allegiant (I like the titles), underperformed at the box office, leaving the final instalment in doubt. So think carefully before you get too attached to Tris (a likeable Shailene Woodley), Four (Theo James), Christina (Zo‘ Kravitz) and the other lithe teens, as they strain against divide-and-rule “factions”, leap from tall buildings and have the occasional intimate moment. Director Neil Burger does decent work with the post-apocalyptic world but it’s generic stuff that doesn’t hold a candle to The Hunger Games. But if the Teen Choice awards speak to you, it may well karate-kick the spot.
