Retail guru Jo Malone: I am horrified by the business skills of contestants on The Apprentice

The scented candles queen will not be saying "you're hired!" to any of Lord Sugar's candidates

Perfumer and retail entrepreneur Jo Malone knows a thing or two about business – so she will certainly not be employing any of the pushy, ambitious contestants from The Apprentice any time soon.

Despite having made several appearances on spin-off shows You’re Fired! and You’re Hired! as a business expert, scented candles creator Jo is unimpressed with the calibre of the candidates.

Asked during a talk at Cheltenham Literature Festival if the BBC show gives the viewing public an accurate impression of what it’s like to be a businessperson and entrepreneur, Jo shot back: “No I don’t. I’ve done The Apprentice, I’ve done the after show. No, I really don’t.”

She added: “Actually, I watch the show because it is entertaining, but I am sometimes horrified by the way some people react and respond in business.

“Half of those people, I have to say, I wouldn’t employ with some of their attitudes.”

Looks like Jo won’t be saying “you’re hired!” to any of this year’s cohort, who have already had a boardroom bust-up over antiques.
