A homeless Jay returns to EastEnders – Jamie Borthwick interview

The actor reveals all about his on-screen reunion with Harry Reid - and what lies in store this Christmas

Jay Brown has returned to Albert Square! Scenes just broadcast during tonight’s EastEnders saw Pam Coker convince Jay to accompany her back to Walford after discovering that he’d been living on the streets.

This evening’s episode of the BBC1 soap saw Pam drop off grandson Paul’s clothes at a homeless shelter, only to find a dishevelled Jay filling out a form for a bed.

A heart to heart between the two of them then resulted in Jay coming home in order to support an emotionally overwrought Ben. Cue a reunion between the two lads that was as pleasing for actor Jamie Borthwick as it was for fans:

“Did I know that when Harry Reid [Ben] joined the show that I was going to have a brother and a best friend for life? No I didn’t. But that’s what he’s become,” the actor said to RadioTimes.com. “I love him to death and I’d do anything for him. I’m looking forward to a really strong future for the two of us.”

Borthwick’s most recent storyline saw his character quit the Square after being placed on the sex offenders’ register thanks to his unfortunate relationship with the under-age Linzi Bragg.

But the actor hopes that Jay can now put the past behind him and be accepted once again by the Mitchells. “I’m hoping it’ll get back to normal as quickly as possible. I think he’ll get back in there a little bit,” he commented.

And those crossing their fingers that Jay will now stick around in the Square can take comfort from the fact that the 22-year-old Borthwick is now filming this year’s Christmas episodes: “It’s not how it usually is this Christmas,” he teased. “Expect a bit of a shock. It’s a mixture of happy and low key.”

This December will also see the Walford star celebrate his ten-year anniversary on the BBC1 soap. But he revealed that he’s happiest keeping away from the limelight:

“I’m quite a quiet lad. I like to go about my business under the radar with close-knit family and friends. I’m an actor, not a celebrity. You can be at every single party if you want to be. If you don’t, you don’t. I prefer to be more low key.”
