Could we be getting a new influx of Mitchells on EastEnders? It certainly seems that way given actor Harry Reid’s teasing on the red carpet at last night’s Inside Soap Awards.
Speaking to RadioTimes.com, Reid (who plays Ben Mitchell on the BBC1 soap) let slip a few hints as to what might happen in the wake of Ronnie and Roxy’s upcoming exit:
“It’s a real shame. Ronnie and Roxy are two Mitchell icons, but I’m sure there are other Mitchells out there. Perhaps in Portugal. It’d be nice to see – there might be a few long-lost people. And the show is always evolving and moving on.”
Both Samantha Womack and Rita Simons are set to leave the cast in the months ahead, however Reid was keen to quash rumours that their departure had resulted in a sour atmosphere on set:
“I’m upset because they’re my friends and my work colleagues. But the show is an evolving machine. Sean [O’Connor] hasn’t come in and wielded the axe – it’s a joint decision and there are no bad feelings on set. It’s exactly the same as it was.”
A current storyline on EastEnders has seen Ben volunteer to be a live liver donor for an ailing Phil and Reid is happy to see his character step up and save his dad’s life despite the risks involved:
“It’s Ben making his own choice. He stood in front of the family and said, ‘I’m giving him some of my liver’. And there was no immediate objection. They just sat back and thought, ‘good for you. You’ve told Phil Mitchell what’s happening and he’s taken it’. It’s a key moment in Ben’s story.”
And as for whether Ben will start looking for love again following the tragic death of his partner Paul, Reid had this to say to fans:
“He’s confused and he’s hurt, but he has desires like any other human being. Yet he feels so attached and committed to this person who’s not in the world anymore. So what do you do? Poor Ben – Paul’s dead, his dad’s dying and he’s giving away his liver. We should give the lad a break!”
