The producers of this Depression-era epic romance can’t have foreseen it being released on video-on-demand in the US for want of distribution. Dubbed the “Lost Jennifer Lawrence-Bradley Cooper movie”, it may work better as home entertainment, with its high production values, internationally renowned director (Susanne Bier, recent Emmy winner for The Night Manager) and top-line star couple. Cooper is restrained and classical as the lumber baron who marries the controlling Lawrence and, after a tragic incident in the North Carolina woods, must deal with spiralling melodrama. Brits including Rhys Ifans, Toby Jones and Sean Harris give variable American accents, and it’s best treated as what we used to disparage as a “TV movie”.
